My family braved the subzero teperatures this weekend to check out a matinee of Narnia the Musical!, performed by the very talented ensemble from the Rocky Mountain Theatre for Kids. The small and intimate Magic playhouse in Boulder was transformed into the magical land of Narnia, where the audience was entertained and amazed by some very talented kids. The story (based on the novel The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis) is taken to a new level with some creative additives, including some Shakespeare and modern choreography and music. There are some great funny moments, mixed in with some very exciting action and emotional encounters. The story follows four adventurous children as they step through a wardrobe into a fantasy land filled with whimsical creatures, a beautiful witch and a brave lion named Aslan. The children learn valuble lessons about good versus evil, trust and hope.
The songs were belted out by some very impressive voices and the great costumes, lighting, smoke and music kept my 4-year-old son entertained for over 2 hours. Despite some of the more advanced dialogue, my son was still able to understand most of the messages and he thought the strobe lights which illuminated the battle scene vey dramatically were "super-cool". Overall, the performance was very enjoyable for the whole family and it was quite obvious that the kids put in a lot of hard work, both behind the scenes and on-stage.
The matinee performances include a snack and drink (which was also a highlight for my son) during the intermission. This weekend will be the final performances of Narnia the Musical! (Friday Dec. 19th at 7 pm and Sat Dec. 20th at 11am & 3pm) but you can also catch the next performance of Pinocchio, Jan. 16th-18th, at the Bug Theatre in Denver. The Theatre also offers a number of classes, along with School Days Off Day Camps if you have any budding actors/actresses in your family.
